Following on from Markus Anders 'Born I Am" - Damien Drake Goes To London sees Damien reunited with his old school friend Brian Edwards. Damien's new life in London doesn't get off to the perfect start he was hoping for and Brian's "Wonderful" life isn't all he's made it out to be. But things are looking up and soon the gruesome twosome will leave an indelible mark on the city and the people they meet.
Damien Drake Goes To London Markus Anders Books
Damien Drake Goes To London is a well-written, breezy, light Gay Romance. And it is, indeed, a true Romance, not a world-changing screed on abuse or PTSD or any of the other favorite Romance writers' maladies of the month. The characters are interesting and charming. The situations, places and dialog are entirely believable and extremely contemporary. There isn't much plot. Boy leaves the North to move to London to train and live. He scores a lot because (of course) he's young, gorgeous and extremely well-hung and uninhibited. He has anonymous sex on a train and in several restrooms.
As a student of the culinary arts (trainee chef), he is apprenticing under a well-regarded chef in one of London's top hotels. One of his co-trainees is an Irish lass whose brother works as a barman in a local tavern. Boy meets barman. Boy falls in love.
The only real strife in the book comes when he overreacts to a traditional prank pulled on him at his boyfriend's family home in Ireland, which they are visiting for New Years. That conflict lasts about two hours. And, by the way, the "poor student-barman" turns out to be rather well-off, but it's not a big deal..
As you might be able to tell from my description, this is not exactly a weighty book. But it is charming, and I will be sure to read any future installments in the Damien Drake saga - just for the fun of it.
P.S. One complaint: there were a few more editing errors than I might have liked. Not a lot (not like some of the recent Gay Romance novels I've read), but because this book is generally so well-written and polished, they were unexpected. And it's the kind of errors that just jump off the page, such as "this is your's" (apostrophe? - even my browser highlighted that misspelling!) or "... lots of guy's like that". Or this classic sentence destruction: "The woman, "Miss Jones." Who worked in HR..." (the author or editor doesn't believe in commas?). It has become one of my major issues with Amazon Kindle gay fiction - we deserve better quality. The gay fiction genre seems to have a much lower quality of editing than other genres in my Kindle library.
This was hardly the worst example, so I didn't penalize my rating of the book for it. And I do recommend the book, if you're looking for something light and breezy for a few hours' entertainment - which I was.
